A nationwide referendum is currently being carried out in Egypt on a new post-revolution constitution. Tensions and violence have become increasingly frequent in the streets of Egypt. There is a growing division between supporters of president Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood, and of the constitution drafted under the president's auspices, and those opposed to the president's usurpation of powers. According to many in the opposition, the constitution lacks guarantees of some of the most basic rights and freedoms, as well as legitimacy because the constitutional assembly drafting it was not representative of Egyptian society. Observers around the world and citizens of Egypt are gripped by the events as they unfold.
